Funnily enough, I finished this painting (based on an image from the pre-selection phase for the 1954 Football World Cup) just as the 2010 World Cup in South Africa is underway. I could hear the cries of joy and desperation of football fans from the bar under my studio window as I was putting the finishing touches on. Nice.

The Cocks (Los Gallos)

Just today we were reminiscing about this painting and how fitting it is that it's owned by a gynocologist in L.A.
If I were him, I would definitely have it up in my examination room.

As a small child I used to have a blast wearing my grandfather's overly huge OTTOFUKKUS.
These brown slippers made out of a single piece of rubber, must be a part of every Iranian's memory bank.

Self-portrait with OTTOFUKKUS is an homage to my grandfather, to a long-lost chidhood, and to the cultural heritage I have from Iran.

After about 4 years of having promised Lucia that I would paint a portrait of her and her son Ivan, I finally got around to it this past month. This portrait is from the time when Lucia was Olga and Ivan was 6 years old and we were all living in bruc. A saturday or sunday morning just before christmas preparing the Belen...
Now I find the double portrait to be a bit strange. Lucia, it´s as if she wears a Japanese Butho mask, and Ivan is very ape-like in posture and figure. But I think with time, it will come to acquire special meaning for them.

Zoorkhaneh, meaning power-house, is a place for men to cultivate mind and body. An ancient tradition in Iran, they still function today. I was lucky to witness such a spectacle in Yazd some years ago. I feel Iran to be very much a part of me, but that I myself am very removed from it. Painting these scenes somehow puts me in touch with the roots I so obstinately hang-on to after years of exile.
